About Us
At Pukeko Early Learning Centre our goal is to provide high quality childcare through:
- A friendly environment that is safe, caring and secure for all children.
- An interesting and stimulating programme that takes a holistic approach to each child’s development – socially, intellectually, physically, and emotionally.
- Dedicated, professional teachers that are sensitive to the learning needs of each child.
- Opportunities for children to develop independence.
- A code of behaviour based on mutual trust and respect for themselves, other people and their environment.
At Pukeko Early Learning Centre we follow the philosophy of a child-initiated programme where the teacher acts as a facilitator to empower the children to become independent learners and have a greater involvement in the process.
Children are encouraged to be responsible for their own decisions – implementing, creating and completing a task. The child initiated philosophy provides a meaningful, quality education. It allows children to interact independently, co-operatively, and thoughtfully. The programme enhances self-esteem and ensures that all children are able to develop to their full potential.
OUR PROGRAMME
Our programme provides a learning environment for children based on the National Early Childhood Curriculum Te Whaariki. We provide learning experiences in all the curriculum areas:
- Science
- Literacy
- Maths and numeracy
- Health and physical education
- Technology
- Social sciences
- The Arts
Children are able to follow their individual and group interests and develop at their own pace within a positive, supportive environment.
The general pattern includes…
- Creative Choice: children choose their own learning challenges – from art and craft, to reading, to physical activities outside.
- Group Programmes and Mat Times: provide structured learning sessions for all age groups to meet the diverse needs of all the children at the centre. Mat times throughout the day are an opportunity for all children to learn together through songs, stories, music and discussions.
- Integrated Arts: children explore music, dance, drama and art both spontaneously and through planned sessions. Creative experiences foster learning in all areas such as maths, language, social skills and communication.
- Outdoor Exploration: children develop physical and social skills, co-ordination and confidence through sand, water, carpentry and many other resources.
- Additional Activities: gymnastics and swimming classes are offered at scheduled times. Parents chose whether to enrol their child for these activities.
